We were off yesterday & today & it was nice to have a break. We decided to take a ride north on Rte 550 to Purgatory yesterday morning & actually ended up going all the way to Silverton. Purgatory was nothing like we expected. We thought it would be a small little town, however,it is mainly condos built around the ski lift - what a disappointment. We did take some side roads off 550 & saw some beautiful lakes & homes along the way.

This is a picture of Silverton from the road into town & a picture of Bob in a pile of snow along the side of the road. We left Durango in shorts, short sleeve shirts & tennis shoes & as we climbed higher into the mountains we started to see snow along the side of the road & snow on the surrounding mountain tops. At 10,900 feet, the clouds started to roll in & we ran into rain/slushy snow hitting the windshield. The clouds stayed with us all the way to Silverton.

What a ride - no guard rails, winding roads & miles down to the bottom. Of course, I was on the drop off side! It was an absolutely spectacular ride up & back. We can now understand why the Animas River is running high & fast. There is still quite a bit of snow still on the "high peaks". This is definitely spectacular country. The mountains are breathtaking & a picture does not even begin to show the enormity of the mountain ranges. We got back to the 5th wheel & had our first thunder storm & rain since we have been here.

It only lasted a short time, just long enough to muddy up the truck & drive us inside. Today, we took a short ride to Bayfield (on the other side of Durango) & this was the opposite extreme. The area is flat with wide open fields & short scrub pines. No where nearly as impressive as the trip north to Silverton. Back to work tomorrow.
