Today was kind of a day to relax. We didn't take any pictures because our camera is acting up. Tomorrow we plan to go looking for a new one because ours is three years old, out of warranty, and will probably cost half of what it's worth to get it fixed. So no pictures for now. We decided yesterday to see if we could get David's riding mower going so he wouldn't have to exhaust himself with the walk-behind. Last night I put it on charge so the battery would be charged up for today's attempt at starting it. This AM after breakfast we checked it out. The engine cranks over but wouldn't start. I checked everything but one thing I'm not very experienced at, is small engine repair. The spark plug looks fine and after cleaning some connections, it was getting spark at the plug but just won't fire. I think maybe the carburetor is gummed up from sitting so long with gas and no stabilizer in it. I don't know enough about those things so the project ended with a riding mower that still won't start.
Since we had no other plans and the weather was overcast looking like rain, we decided to take a ride around Cape Cod. So after lunch, we headed South on US 6A, following Cape Cod Bay down the Western side of the Cape through Brewster, Dennis, Yarmouth, Barnstable, Sandwich, and Bourne. At Bourne we picked SR28 and drove South to the bottom of the Cape through Falmouth, Mashpee, back into Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Dennis into Harwich, Chatham and back to Orleans. There was quite a bit of traffic and in some places the road was barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass. We went right through the downtown sections of many of these little towns and there were lots of pedestrians also. I'm sure glad we called David on our way here when we reached the Cape and he told us the best route. We were headed up this way and would have had some real hair raising stretches of road with our 5th wheel in tow. There were some stretches where the telephone poles and trees were so close to the road that they had big gouges out of them - probably from trucks. US 6A would be a great road for a motorcycle tour - Dave, Scott, Big John and Larry would probably love it. We saw the world renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute on the map in Falmouth and wanted to stop and check it out but we couldn't find it. We saw signs but none led to the entrance. We concluded it must be down some back street but couldn't locate it. When we finished we had covered 110 miles at a leisurely pace in about 4 1/2 hours. We really saw a lot of the Cape but I continually get turned around and have a hard time telling which direction I'm going. When the GPS mapping program says we're going West or East, the road signs say I'm going South or North. They refer to the actual compass direction of the US not the way your actually going. It's like driving from Tucson in Southern AZ to Phoenix, which is to it's North, but the highway is labeled I-10 West. Just like to government to make everything SIMPLE!!!!
