GETTYSBURG
We were leaving Cherry Hill Park yesterday to the tune of "Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head" at around 7:20am. I honestly think that we have had 3 days of sunshine since we left Arizona about two weeks ago. We hit the 495 Belt Way West at 7:30am and merged into four lanes of bumper to bumper traffic - creeping slowly around Washington, DC. After merging in, Robert stayed in the right hand lane. We were not sure if these crazy drivers would ever let us back in to get off this mess. It took us over an hour to go nine miles on the Beltway and all were heard on the radio was this or that highway was "jammed" - no kidding! We finally took Route 15 north to Gettysburg and ran into a little less traffic going north. The south bound lane going toward Washington, DC, however, was now four lane bumper to bumper. I will never complain of the heavy traffic on the Superstition Freeway or the I-10 again. I can't imagine having to deal with this day after day to get to work. We spent the day at Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. I would highly recommend the Visitors Center where there is an extensive exhibit gallery regarding the Battle of Gettysburg, two theaters where they show a film "A New Birth of Freedom" which is narrated by Morgan Freeman, Cyclorama - America's largest painting the "Battle of Gettysburg" with sound and light show. The Cyclorama and the movie are an awesome, moving experience and gives you a new perspective of the enormity of the battle. There is a charge to see the museum, film and cyclorama, but well worth it. From there we took the driving tour through the Gettysburg National Military Park. As usual, we took plenty of pictures, however, I have to wait until we can get a better Internet access to up load them to the web. As with the visitor"s center, the 24 mile drive through the battlefield added to the visual magnitude of the battle. We left Gettysburg late in the afternoon and headed north again toward Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Since it was getting late, we headed to the nearest Flying J for the night and a little R and R. After a quick dinner, I started captioning pictures and Robert put in a call to Suzanne and Bob Carls who are Summering here in Carlisle. We are going to get together with them this morning for breakfast and a visit before we head further east toward Orleans, Mass. We will post our Gettysburg pictures the next time we stop at an RV Park with Internet Access. Robert just came in and said "it's really beautiful out there again" - a fine mist, 50 degrees, windy and rain predicted for the next few days. Oh, well....., that's live in the "East Lane"!
