DAY 27 OF OUR ALASKAN ADVENTURES

We woke to slightly cloudy skies for our last day in Anchorage. The office at the Golden Nugget RV park did not open until 10am - bankers hours - wouldn't Ardie & Dwayne love those hours (10am-6pm), Monday through Thursday. After breakfast, we ran to Wal Mart to get a few prescriptions filled for Bob, and to get our propane tank filled. Of course, the Pharmacy did not open until 9am and here we were biting at the bullet to get on the road for the last trek of our trip to Moose Pass. Oh, by the way, on the way to Wal Mart, we spotted a Moose right along the side of the road toward town, munching on the new leaves on a Birch tree. Needless to say we did not have the camera handy. We got back, hooked up and on the road around 1030am. The excitement was building. We took the Seward Highway down from Anchorage to Moose Pass. The major streets in Anchorage were one way, so we were lucky to have "Gar", the GPS showing us the way. The traffic here was very busy, with most streets one way (for some unknown reason, they did not mark them as one way).
The Seward Highway provides access to the Kenai Peninsula from Anchorage. It winds along the north shore of Turnagain Arm, crossing the isthmus that separates the Kenai Peninsula from the rest of south central Alaska about 52 miles from Anchorage. The Chugach Mountains are visible across the Turnagain Arm. It was a little hazy when we hit this area. The Alaska Railroadfollows the right side of the road between the road and the Turnagain Arm Inlet. The tide was out and there are warnings not to go out on the mud flats at low tide because the glacial silt and water can create a dangerous quicksand. It was really disgusting looking. There were many areas to turn off for photo ops, but we were meeting Gary and Treva at Spruce Moose and running a tad late so.....We crossed over Ingram Creek which separated the Kenai Peninsula from southern Alaska. Gary had told us the road was good, but I would question his judgment at this time. We were climbing and the road was pretty rough. (picture)
We did stop for Bob to take a potty break and I managed to get some pictures at the Sixmile Creek pull out. The weather was beautiful, the sun was out and it was warm enough that we did not have to put on jackets. The snow is melting quickly now and there are many waterfalls along the side of road. (picture)
We got to Moose Pass and pulled into the Spruce Moose Chalets about 100PM. Gary and Treva were there to greet us. After we got the 5th wheel parked, they fixed us lunch and give us an introduction to the job we'll be doing for the summer. Now the REAL adventure begins. Wish Dharma was here to enjoy all the new smells and sounds of Alaska. Now that we've reached our destination, we may not make an entry in the blog every day, since you know where we are now. We will make entries if something new and exciting happens.
