We woke up to sunny, clear skies again this morning. We have been blessed with beautiful weather since we left Arizona. We left Desert Rose RV Resort around 8AM and headed for the local Wal Mart to do some "stocking up" shopping. What in the world would we ever do without Wal Mart?! We finally got on the road around 1015AM and headed north on US 395. Our goal was to at least make it to the Oregon border today. With me driving a little now, we are probably not making as good mileage or time. I'm still only comfortable driving around 60mph. What can I say - I'm a little old lady. We stopped for lunch at a rest area at Honey Lake in California. I took these two pictures because it was so strange to see snow and pine trees on the left hand side of the road and an enormous dry lake on the right side of the road.

We actually saw quite a few dry lake beds or we assumed they were dry lake beds in Nevada. They were all just pure white - very strange. It almost looked like salt or even snow. US 395 is a secondary road, and in very good condition, except that it was a "tad" windy today and tended to shift us around a little when I was driving. I hung in there though. We stayed on 395 north until Alturas and decided to adjust our plans and start heading east. We picked up US 139 which would bring us into Oregon. We drove through Modoc National Forest and it was just like taking 87 from Payson to Mesa. We arrived at our favorite place - Wal Mart - around 530PM and check in at Customer Service to see if we could spend the night in the parking lot. Unlike Arizona they must not have any laws forbidding overnight parking, because the gal told us that we were welcome to stay for up to 10 days even. We will spend the night here and then head out tomorrow morning. After checking various routes, we decided to take US 140 west to Medford, OR and then hit I-5 and take that north. Our original idea was to take US 97 north through Oregon & Washington but Bob is a little concerned about driving through the Cascade Mountains. We opted to play it safe and avoid all those passes. We will let you know how it works out tomorrow.
