DAY 7 OF OUR ALASKAN ADVENTURES

Today was a better day for us. We got up early after a goods nights sleep and were on the road by 7:15. We headed north on US 95. This is a good 2 lane road without a lot of traffic. You don't notice when your driving, but if you pay attention to your GPS you'll see your making a gradual assent into the mountains. We started at about 950 feet in elevation and by the time we reached the summit we had reached over 6000 feet about 150 miles later. I drove for the first couple hours and then Judy decided she wanted to drive again so we stopped in a rest area and she took over. She drove for about two hours and did a great job again. I got to sit back and nap a bit. She even kicked her speed up to 60MPH and we made some pretty good time. There are a lot of mountains in this part of Nevada but 95 goes right up between most of them but off in the distance we could see a lot of them still had snow on them. The ones close to us were clear but the distant ones had lots of snow. I'm sure we'll see a lot more snow before we reach Alaska. There were also these areas that looked like dried up lakes of salt or something like it. Very strange to say the least. We think they're dried up lake beds of some kind. We'll ask our friend Elaine next time we see her what they are. She's a Nevada resident and if anyone knows what they are she'll know. You see some of the strangest things in some of these far out places like the old boat in the little town of Luning, NV that had been made into a restaurant.

This is where we'll spend the night. We've covered about 1250 of the 4000 we have to go. So far we've only had to stop for diesel fuel three times paying from a low of $2.099/gal to a high of $2.499/gal. We're stopping tonight at Desert Rose RV Park in Fernley, NV so we'll have water and sewer hookups for showers. We also need to dump our holding tanks. Also we'll have electric since it's rather warm and we need to run the A/C so we can be comfortable enough to get some sleep. After we got parked and hooked up we found the circuit breaker in our hookup pedestal was defective and park maintenance had to come and replace it before we had power. Our early relaxed stop turned out to be a little more stressful than we hoped but they finally got it fixed. Tomorrow we hope to make it to Oregon stopping at WalMart somewhere along the way to restock the frig. Keep watching for our progress and where-a-bouts. As an after thought, you can enlarge any photo we post just by clicking on it.
