Today is the 4th of July and we don't really have any plans to go to fireworks tonight. There are displays at some of the towns around like Durango and Silverton, but don't start until about 9:30 PM and then by the time we'd get home it'd be 12:30 or 1:00 in the morning and we have to work tomorrow so we'll probably just stay home and relax. Nancy and Kurt arrived here on Wednesday and have been touring the area. Kurt came here many times in his younger days so he knows where to go.
They came over last night and we had a cook out and visited. They went to Silverton and Quray (pronounced Uray) today. They may stay for the fireworks up there but then they'll have to drive back down the mountain in the dark. On Saturday they're going to ride the Train from Durango to Silverton. It's supposed to be a real scenic ride. Judy and I plan to do it later in the season.Judy and I took a walk up County Road 250 the other day to a place just north of here called Baker's Bridge to look at the Animas River. It is really cool and we took some pictures. As you can see the river is still running very fast from all the snow melt but is starting to recede and the water is getting a lot clearer than when we first arrived here. The campgrounds is really full for the 4th weekend. Almost every spot is taken.
This place is pretty popular with the majority of people coming from Texas. Don't know what it is that brings them all this way some for only 2 or 3 days. I guess it's about 1 1/2 days drive from TX. We've had rain here every day for the last 3 or 4 days. The sun comes out in the morning and than by 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon the clouds start rolling in and the thunder starts clapping, we get about 30 to 60 minutes of rain, then it all clears up for the rest of the day. We had some of the same a little while ago but no rain yet this time. The sun is back out now so maybe the rain has passed for today. We have a nice breeze now and it's starting to cool off. It got all the way up to 87° today. If it wasn't for all the snow in the winter, a person could get to like this place.
