I looked at the calendar this morning, and was amazed to find that it is almost July and that we have been here for about one and a half months. Without TV or radio access at the chalets and 5th wheel, we have found that it is difficult to keep track of days and dates. Our days are based on guests checking in and checking out and before we realize it a month has gone by.
We woke up Tuesday morning to a scattering of new snow on all the mountain peaks surrounding Moose Pass. The temperature had dropped to the high 30's over the night and the rain that we received here in the valley resulted in snow on the peaks. Of course, Sunday was the first day of summer, so who would have ever expected snow on the peaks again. I just had to get the camera out and take some pictures. I was sure that no one in Arizona would believe us.
The family from Florida staying at Wild Rose, here for 11 days, went hiking at Exit Glacier on Tuesday (despite it raining), and talked with a group of young hikers from Pennsylvania who ran into a snow storm while hiking on the upper part of the glacier that day. If there is one thing we have learned, since being here, it is that you do not curtail any outdoor plans because of the weather. If you did, you would be home bound most of the time. The native Alaskans take all this inclement weather in stride and we are adapting to there way of think also.
We had another bear encounter on Tuesday afternoon. I had just finished cleaning Stellar Jay around 4pm and headed back to the 5th wheel to call it a day. I sat down in my rocking chair to relax before thinking about cooking dinner. Bob had walked over to Stellar Jay to pick up one of those blocks of bird seed that he was going to hang on the tree outside the window on the right side of the 5th wheel. I got up to get a drink and looked out the window and there was the "little" black bear again. I called Bob to let him know that we had a visitor again and to be careful coming back over from Stellar Jay. However, he was already in the storage shed next to the 5th wheel.

I told him to stay put until the coast was clear. The little guy wandered off across the little stream next to the 5th wheel and into the trees. I gave Bob the all clear and he came back into the 5th wheel. I had given Bob the choice of chicken, fish, hot dogs or BLT's for dinner. Around 515pm I decided to start getting everything together. When I got up and looked out the window, there was our furry friend again, out behind the 5th wheel. Bob got out the camera and I started cooking the bacon and we watched this little guy strolling around the 5th wheel for about 30 minutes. At one point, Bob had sat back down at his computer and the next thing he saw was a paw and claws at the bottom of the window. We think that he could smell the bacon and was trying to find a way to join us for dinner. He wandered around the 5th wheel for quite awhile and when he finally decided the the bacon was not an option, he stood on his hind legs and tried to reach up and get the food out of the bird feeder.
Bob managed to get his picture before he decided that enough was enough and pounded on the window and scared him away. He scurried into the woods, but kept debating about coming back and watching the 5fth wheel. He finally must have decided that it was too much trouble and walked casually back into the woods toward the pole line. We do not know where mama was - thank goodness she did not show up! Anyway, that was our excitement of the day. Needless to say the bird feeders came down shortly after that. This all happened on Tuesday and this if Friday and we have not seen him since. It was exciting though. Bob was jumping from one window to the other - all excited.
